Japanese Hiragana Language Teaching Phonetic Signs Symbols Wooden Tiles or Blocks
Illustrated; pictures with names on the back of the blocks.
The measurements are approximately 1.75" X 1.75" X .25" (1/4")
These belonged to my father-in-law. Following his death 3 years ago, we were sorting through his things and came upon these phonetic learning blocks. Norm was stationed in Japan during the Korean War and that's when he purchased these so they date back to 1950-1953
Please see the photos for part of the description. The first 2 and last 2 photos are in the correct sequence. The other ones I took prior to further researching so they are not in any specific order.
There are 49 total blocks. 46 of them appear to be the complete alphabet (?). 2 are blank on both sides and 1 is a double picture, I didn't see anything like it specifically in the various charts I was looking at.
The phonetic signs included are:
A, KA, SA, TA, NA, HA, MA, YA, RA, WA, N
I, KI, SHI, CHI, NI, HI, MI, RI
U, KU, SU, TSU, NU, FU, MU, YU, RU
E, KE, SE, TE, NE, HE, ME, RE
O, KO, SO, TO, NO, HO, MO, YO, RO, O (this last O looks different on the chart.. it begins and ends with O)
Some of these, the writing is worn off a little.. if you look online as I did, you can see how they should be and perhaps can rewrite it? I think I would if I were to keep this set.
